Measure N: Hotel Tax Rate Increase

Scotts Valley Is a Great Place to Live

Scotts Valley has a long tradition of having safe neighborhoods and great schools and parks, in addition to being the gateway to the Santa Cruz Mountains, connecting thousands of people to Silicon Valley and the Monterey Bay. Our residents take pride in where they live, making sure Scotts Valley remains one of the best places in the County to live, work, and raise a family.

Keep Scotts Valley Beautiful

Scotts Valley is the gem of Santa Cruz County; we enjoy a low crime rate, strong property values, award-wining schools, and friendly park and recreational outdoor spaces.  Keeping Scotts Valley beautiful does place a strain on local resources, as do the visitors who stay in our community.  The hotel tax is a way for visitors to reimburse the City for the impacts they create. Hotel tax revenue is used to repair streets and roads, provide quality police and 9-1-1 emergency response services, and maintain and improve our parks.

Local Funding for Local Services

The City’s first priority is to protect the safety of the community and preserve the quality of life that we all expect in Scotts Valley. To address these needs, the Scotts Valley City Council placed Measure N on the November 6, 2018 ballot to provide stable, locally-controlled funding for city services.

Measure N would enact a 1% increase in the City’s hotel tax, otherwise known as transient occupancy tax (“TOT”).  A hotel tax is a fee assessed to tourists who stay in local hotels and other lodging establishments. This proposed rate adjustment would generate an additional $230,000 a year, which could be used to:

» Provide police protection and emergency response services
» Maintain and enhance city parks and playgrounds
» Repair sidewalks and streets
» Provide other services and improvements in Scotts Valley

Fiscal Accountability

By law, all Measure N funds must stay here in Scotts Valley under local control and cannot be taken away by the State.
